After the Hurricane, How Did We Do?

August 29th, 2011

The state web portal (delaware.gov) shifted focus in last few days almost entirely onto preparations for, and response to, Hurricane Irene. We shared information on the web, on FaceBook, and on Twitter in an effort to get as much information as possible to the people of the state.

Now that the storm has passed, we at the Government Information Center start to ask ourselves some questions. What worked? What didn’t? What was most useful to Delawareans?

So we’ve created a short, unscientific survey as part of an effort to learn from our response to Irene and to plan for future. We’ll gather responses for a few days and see what we learn. If it’s anything really interesting, we’ll share it here.

So. Do us a favor and take our survey. Thanks!

I found most of my information on DEMA’s website and on Twitter.

The state government did an EXCELLENT job with this storm. Evacuations were timely and effective. We were lucky to not be hit as hard as predicted. I’m very impressed with the government officials. Thank you.

My home computer is crashed, I don’t twtter, and I can’t be bothered with a smartphone.
TV and radio, however, work just fine.

I heard enough to leave me with the information I needed, and to leave me confident that the State and County had a fairly well-organized plan. That was plenty for me. I don’t really ask for any more than that from my government, and I got what I wanted and needed.

    Well done.

I thought more coverage should have been given to Delaware on TV. I watched Channel 3 and 6 and 13 only once in a while did our state come up with what was happening. Most of the coverage was centered on Philadelphia and New York and New Jersey. Our state is just as important as the others. While I did not venture outdoors during the hurricane, it would have been nice to know what was happening in our small state.

Our own commercial TV station would be nice. If not possible at this time, perhaps someone could contact Channels 3 and 6 and 13 and ask them to include the state. I changed channels frequently but no one seemed to carry information on Delaware. I did check the internet from time to time.
